USA name 2011/12 senior women’s squad

US Lacrosse has announced its selections for the 2011/12 national team (see below for names). Following a three-day trial, 36 players have been chosen to represent the USA during the coming season during which they will compete at the Stars & Stripes Weekend in October and the Champion Challenge in January, as well as taking part in a number of national clinics and training sessions throughout the year.

The final roster of 36 women was chosen from a group of 80 of the top players in the USA and it is thought that this squad will act as a foundation for the next World Cup team who will compete in Ontario, Canada in 2013.

“We’re really excited about the team we put together,” said USA head women’s coach, Ricky Fried.

“The athleticism of each player individually and of the group of 36 collectively is just remarkable. We’re really looking forward to getting the squad together in October to begin putting the pieces together and laying the foundation for the 2013 FIL World Cup.”

National teams program director, Nathaniel Badder added: “This was the hottest tryout we’ve had, and the players did not let that stand in their way.

“They battled all weekend. The level of play on the field was just outstanding. It’s comforting to see so many returning players come back and exciting to see so many new players join the group. It will be a lot of fun to see them come together and play as one team in the year ahead.”

UK residents might recognise some of the players from this year’s NCAA tournament, with players such as Shannon Smith (scored four goals for Northwestern in the final against Maryland) featuring in the line-up.

The new USA senior squad will begin training in October.
